Obituary of Bernice Clare Jackins

April 26, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Bernice Jackins, beloved wife of Ralph Jackins, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the age of 89 years. Bernice was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Born and raised in Regina, SK, Bernice attended St. Mary's Girls School in Calgary, AB, and graduated with Matriculation. She was a skilled stenographer and worked at various organizations such as, General Aide Bishop Carroll High School and ICG. In her free time, Bernice enjoyed knitting, quilting, crocheting, sewing, solving crosswords, playing Candy Crush on her iPad, and golfing. She had talent. Bernice made Cowichans for all the men in the family, and she also sewed dance costumes and school clothing. She was a member of Queens and Jacks square dancing and the Good Sams RV club. She was renowned for baking the best carrot cake! Bernice enjoyed camping in the Forestry and her favourite place: Scotch Creek Provincial campground in BC.

Bernice and Ralph RVed to many different places. They went across the United States, across Canada, and even to Alaska. They spent many winters in Mesa, Arizona. Bernice and Ralph also enjoyed cruising. She went on a Disney, Alaskan, and a Mediterranean cruise where she saw Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and France. Unfortunately, she was unable to see the Vatican, which was on her bucket list. Bernice also went to Hawaii. She was well traveled.

Bernice enjoyed watching sports. She would attend the many sporting events her children, and grandchildren, were participating in. She was especially passionate about the Flames and Stampeders, which sometimes had her blood pressure rise a little too much.

Bernice was an active member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Parish for many decades. She was in the CWL, Hospitality, and Palliative Care team, to name a few. One of Bernice's proudest moments was when she participated in the opening ceremony of the 1988 Winter Olympics, as a square dancer.

However, her greatest achievement was her loving family, which included her husband, Ralph, their two sons, Ken (Candy) and Bob (Johanna); and their daughter Leslie (Gabe). Bernice was also blessed with seven grandchildren, Tyler (Erin), Shelby-Lynne (Stephen), Emily (Chris), Bryan (Ashlee), Sean (Kristin), Jeremy (Rika), and Daniel (Jasmine); and five great-grandchildren, Lucas, Bentley, Jade, Samantha, Thomas, and Liam.

Bernice was predeceased by her parents, George and Mary; two brothers, Jim and Jack; and her four sisters, Jean, Audrey, Fran, and Jo. She will be lovingly remembered by her brother Art, and her extended family and friends.

Thank you to the staff at South Health Campus who provided excellent, warm, and compassionate care for Bernice. The family felt blessed to have her so well comforted. She will be remembered for her sense of humour, her spirited cheering for her favourite teams, her engaging smile, and her loving support for her family, especially the love she had for her life-long husband, and partner, Ralph.

As Bernice's family and friends mourn her loss, they take comfort in knowing that she will be remembered for her unwavering love and devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in their hearts.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Father Julian Studden will preside.
