Condolences
We have just read of Jacks passing. Our condolences to the family. Jack and Sheila were our neighbours for many years and Jack a business associate. Many an evening Speaking Words over a fine glass of whiskey or wine. To me Jack was a philosopher and one of creative thinking. I greatly enjoyed those thinking conversations. It has been quite a few years since we had a visit. We should have spoken more words. Condolences Alan and Deborah
My condolences Sheila and family on the passing of Jack. He was such a brilliant man. I have only fond memories of my time working with him at Golder in Calgary.
Condeolences to Sheila and all his family. He was extremely proud of the achievements of his children and took great joy in his grandchildren.
Marie and I first met Jack when we joined the Gourmet group about 25 years ago and subsequently enjoyed many evenings and parties where Jack would entertain us all with his guitar playing and various songs by Jake Thackeray and others. Jack 'spoke words' frequently and enjoyed the good natured exchanges they generated. We had many good times in years past in Puerto Vallarta, Jack and Sheila's preferred winter home. His old Irish charm and wit are already missed.
It was a shock and very saddening to hear of Jack's passing. Condolences to Sheila and family from Irene, Stephen and family.
I was very fortunate to have been a school chum of Jack's at Rainey Endowed School in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland. My family moved away from Magherafelt, and we lost touch until a mutual friend reintroduced us in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Our time knowing Jack in our later life's was all too brief but most enjoyable. Rest in peace, Jack. You will always be well remembered and missed.
First, condolences to Sheila and family. In 1974 I was in Golder’s Mississauga drafting office, and Jack occupied a prestigious cubicle slightly to the side of the drafting tables. The banter exchange between the cubicles and my area certainly made the days fly by. Meeting again in Calgary in 1984 we became workmates again, but much more significantly I count Jack as a lifelong friend. Jack often was the inspiration I sought for various endeavors, as he had the uncanny ability to state the obvious in the simplest of terms. There shan’t be another Jack. Tread softly my friend.
Condolences to Shiela and the family. Jack was a great colleague, social friend and will long be cherished as an inspiration to many at Golder. I shall always remember his effervescent good humour and astute technical insight in dealing with any challenge that arose in the multiple projects where we worked together.
It's sad to hear of Jack's passing. In 1985 he hired me at Golder. His enthusiasm for soil mechanics prompted me to continue my studies in critical state soil mechanics. He was a good mentor and it was enjoyable working with Jack.
I met Jack as a young engineer in the Calgary office and had the opportunity of working with him on a few projects. Moreover, I had the pleasure of having dinner at his and Sheila's house for a work event and heard Jack 'speak words' and play his guitar. A tremendous loss. My sincere condolences to Shelia and the family.
I had the delight of "speaking words" with Jack many times during my 30 years at Golder. His encouragement and mentorship of the "young guns" of geotechnical engineering (Dennis Becker, Ken Been, Mike Jefferies) back in the early 1980's help create and put into practice a new branch of soil mechanics. So a toast both to his story telling and his contributions to our profession.
So sorry to hear of Jack's passing.
Fond memories of the two years that we worked together in Taipei, with me working for Moh and Associates and Jack seconded in from Golder. What stands out in memory is Jack's enormous enthusiasm for everything: his family, work, the occasional games of bridge that he hosted, even driving in Taipei traffic which was chaotic and followed its own rules. He was instrumental in me joining Golder, first in UK then in Canada, after leaving Taipei.
