Obituary of Greg Sutherland

August 17, 1949 – Black River, Jamaica

May 19, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Greg “Suddy” Sutherland passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the age of 74 years. He will be greatly missed by his wife Betty, children, Natasha, Nick, and Mike; grandson Denzel, mother Hyacinth Cleaver, sister Glenda Sutherland, brothers, Roddy Cleaver and Dwight Sutherland; aunt Terry Ziadie, uncle Joe Chin, sisters-in-law Ruth Hudson, Dot Deller, Laura Ryckman, and Deyounto Sutherland; brother-in-law Bob Deller, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.

Greg was born on August 17, 1949, in Black River, Jamaica, and attended Munro College before immigrating to Toronto in 1971 and moving to Calgary in 1976. His love for Jamaica was palpable and he often recounted adventures of his youth on the island. Greg travelled to Jamaica regularly to sit in the sun and swim in the sea; he especially enjoyed his most recent visit, chatting and reminiscing with longtime childhood friends.

Greg was a gentle person who was devoted to his family, holding a special place in his heart for his mom. He was well-liked in work and social circles, never forgot a face or (nick)name, and had many friends with whom he loved to chat, share a joke, and laugh with.

Greg’s greatest passion was sports. His natural athletic ability allowed him to pick up a ball, racket, or club and play at an accomplished level. Soccer was his favourite sport and he played at the college level in both Jamaica and Canada, achieving recognition for his ability. He also loved to golf and spent many hours studying the game, hoping to make those elusive birdies!

A Celebration of Greg’s Life will be held at Good Shepherd Moravian Church (6311 Norfolk Drive, Calgary, AB T2K 5J8) on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to stay for refreshments following the service.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to Greg’s service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
