Obituary of Jeff UnRuh
October 30, 1961 – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
May 27, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Jeffrey Dean UnRuh (Jeff) on Monday, May 27, 2024, following medical complications related to an aortic dissection at the age of 62 years.
Jeff was born in Moose Jaw, SK, the eldest son of Victor and Cathy UnRuh (nee Klock). He spent his childhood in Leader, Shaunavon, and Prince Albert before completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan in 1984. Even at a young age, Jeff understood the value of community as a Boy Scout, the value of hobbies as a game player and a card collector, and the value of a dollar as he managed his paper route!
Jeff worked in public accounting while in Saskatchewan and with the Alberta Wheat Pool upon him relocating to Calgary in 1987. After several years working as a Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Jeff obtained his Certified Financial Planner designation (CFP). Following a stint developing financial planning software at Intuit, Jeff worked for four years as a financial planner with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). For the past fifteen years, he was a member of the RBC Family Office Services team at RBC Dominion Securities. Jeff took great pride in his work, interacting with advisors and clients. He also mentored new colleagues and supported the new Investment Advisor program.
Jeff and Susan married in April 1995 and had two children, Thomas and Kristin. As a family, they enjoyed cross-country skiing with the Rocky Mountain Jackrabbits, hiking and biking, spending time in the Invermere Valley with good friends, and travelling around Canada and abroad.
Jeff was a friendly and personable fellow who loved a good laugh and who appreciated his friends and family, his neighbours, and his colleagues. Being of service mattered to him, whether as a consultant at work or as a community volunteer. Being a “numbers guy”, there was always an opportunity to serve as the Treasurer of a not-for-profit board, and he did so happily.
Jeff had a zest for life and always had a hobby on the go, whether it be motorbiking as a young man, following Formula One racing, slot cars, Napoleonic war gaming, sailing, rock band, flight sim, or cheering on his beloved LA Dodgers. He was a student of history and enjoyed travelling and learning more about the world. Although friendly and affable, he was also introverted and enjoyed his downtime, snuggling up with his kitties, Ali and Chinook. Having dealt with both heart issues and anxiety as a young man, he appreciated his health above all else.
Jeff is survived by his loving wife Susan, his children, Thomas and Kristin; his brother Wayne and family, his father Victor, stepmother Kay, and numerous extended family members. He was predeceased by his mother Cathy.
