Obituary of Brian Albert Stone
July 13, 1952 – Midland, Ontario
June 24, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Brian Albert Stone was born in Midland, ON, to John and Nancy Stone. Growing up on a farm in Phelpston, ON, he was one of eight siblings, with seven brothers and one sister.
Brian is predeceased by his parents, John and Nancy Stone; and his brothers, Jack, Eric, Leonard, and Chuck. He is survived by his brothers, Dan (Joanne) of Thunder Bay, ON, Frank (Elene) of Sudbury, ON, and Rick (Linda) of Calgary, AB; and his sister Maureen, also of Calgary. He is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.
In April 2014, Brian moved to Calgary to spend time with his brother Rick and sister Maureen. Despite being born with cerebral palsy and having physical limitations, Brian lived life to the fullest. He found joy in painting and nature walks, and particularly loved playing and winning at cards. He also enjoyed watching westerns, especially the Heartland series. Brian decorated Rick's tree in front of his house with his painted birdhouses, Rick proudly marked it with a plaque that read "Brian's Tree." He delighted in discovering people's favourite colours and painting gifts for special friends. Brian also enjoyed playing bingo, listening to country music, and dancing.
He had a passion for travelling and meeting new people, he initially flew solo to visit Maureen in Saskatoon. In later years, he flew with Rick and cherished his time in Saskatoon and enjoyed his friendships there.
Brian also had a group of special friends who visited him often. Phil was a weekly visitor and a great card player, who sparked Brian’s competitive spirit. Over the years, Brian established fun-loving friendships with many, charming everyone with his humour and gentlemanly nature.
Brian had many gifts, but his sense of humour brought great joy to Rick, Maureen, and all his friends. His life motto was, "Life is what you make of it." He often reminded Rick and Maureen, "You worry too much," "Take your time," and "Let's go for burgers," his favourite meal. Brian loved butterflies, the colour blue, and always requested that Rick and Maureen drive blue vehicles.
Joy and laughter are how Brian will be remembered. Shopping for art supplies and his own clothing brought him great happiness. Brian was a kind, loving, and patient man who taught us to enjoy life, his spiritual nature allowed him to live in the moment. He taught us to laugh at ourselves and easily forgive ourselves and others. A special mention goes to Brian's personal physician, Dr. Vacy Lyle, who greatly enjoyed Brian's visits, often extending his appointments.
Brian was well-loved and appreciated by his family and special friends, and his memory will live on. God bless Brian, and we know you are at peace, painting, singing, and dancing with the angels.
A special Celebration of Brian’s Life will be held in nature, with family and friends coming together to honour him. The celebration will include Brian’s love of food and music, his creative endeavours, butterflies, birdhouses, balloons, and the colour blue. Family and friends will be invited to share personal reminisces of Brian’s relationships. Details to follow. All the special memories of Brian we will keep in our hearts, we will honour his joyful spirit by continuing to remember him.
“May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”
This is a translation, as this Irish blessing was originally written in the Irish language, but this is the form it is most commonly spoken in today.
