Obituary of Frederick Roy Hutchings
1961 – 2024
It is with much sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Frederick Hutchings, beloved husband of Kathy Hutchings, of Calgary, AB. He passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024, at the age of 62 years, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Fred was born in Fort St. John, BC, to Roy and Evelyn Hutchings, and was the middle child of four sisters. He grew up in Peace River, Dawson Creek, BC, then Gibbons, AB.
In 1983, Fred graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree. He moved to Slave Lake where he began his career in the oil and gas industry. In 1986, he married Kathy and they had two sons, Taylor and Jordan. They were married for 38 years.
Fred worked as a technical sales representative, where he accepted positions in Edmonton, AB, Houston, TX, and the People’s Democratic Republic of the Congo. Later, based out of Calgary, Fred explored entrepreneurial business and growth opportunities within the oil and gas industry that often took him around the world. He retired in 2017 and continued to enjoy business challenges by sitting on two corporate boards and mentoring many professionals.
Fred loved work and business, but he really loved the family cottage at Norbury Lake, BC. There, he fished, relished ATV trips exploring rugged trails, and enjoyed yard work in the sun followed by happy hours and bonfires with good friends and family.
In 2019, Fred realized a dream by riding his motorcycle over 4,000 km from Calgary to Tuktoyaktuk to see the Arctic Ocean.
He will be most remembered for his excellent storytelling abilities, whether at a dinner party he was hosting with Kathy or in his travel journals.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Kathy, and their two sons, Taylor and Jordan. Fred was predeceased by his father Roy, and sister Colleen.
The family would like to thank the amazing team of health professionals in Unit 58 and Unit 66, South Health Campus, and Dr. Boucher, Dr. Dhaliwal, and Dr. Gracias for making his last few weeks better.
