Obituary of Mary Anderson
February 2, 1931 - Portage la Prairie, Manitoba
September 3, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Mary Anderson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at the age of 93 years.
Mary was born in Portage la Prairie, MB, on February 2, 1931, where she was raised with her parents and five older brothers. Despite growing up on the “wrong side of the tracks” in a Polish immigrant family, Mary and her parents valued her education greatly. Mary was bright, and determined, receiving many accolades throughout her schooling. Later in life, Mary would bring that same attitude to her career as a bookkeeper, and she loved to work.
Mary met and married Merv Anderson in 1951. Together they moved to Trail, BC, and then settled in their home of Calgary, AB in 1957. Together, Mary and Merv had two children, many pets, a home in Calgary, and a cherished cabin on the Columbia River in Fairmont, BC.
Mary had a deep love of animals and care for other people. She was an extensive philanthropist, supporting many organizations that work to make a difference in the world. She loved the outdoors, including hiking, camping, and golf. Mary also loved classical music and opera, which she shared with her family. Her granddaughter's favourite memories include drinking tea and doing crossword puzzles together.
Mary was a savvy, self-taught investor, and her television frequently tuned to the Business News Network. Mary held strong opinions and took every opportunity to share her thoughts with anyone who would listen.
She will be most remembered for her independence, tenacity, sharp mind, strong spirit, and fierce passion.
Mary is survived by her daughter Janice Klein, her granddaughters, Jennifer Ghattas (Nader) and Katie Milner (Tanner); as well as her precious great-grandsons, Hani, Zaidan, and Malek Ghattas; and her great-grand-dog Hank. Mary is also survived by her cousin Carrie Dunning of Winnipeg, MB, and nephew John Kuly of Vernon, BC, and their families. Mary will also be remembered by many good friends and extended family members.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved son Mark, husband Merv, five brothers and parents, and son-in-law Tony.
Thanks to Brentwood Intercare for the care, they provided Mary in her final months.
The family is hosting a drop-by “Tea & Treats” afternoon in Mary’s memory on Saturday, September 20, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Janice’s home.
