Obituary of Carol Rosemarie Askham
December 8, 1947 – Kendal, England
July 7, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Carol Askham of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the age of 76 years.
Carol was born in Kendal, England, on December 8, 1947. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur William Brighton Askham, and survived by her children Maria (Brian), Jean (Ronald) and Gavin Askham, grandchildren Nathan, Logan, Jane, and Isabel.
Carol had five siblings, her brothers Kieth, John, Norman, and two sisters, June, and Linda Judge. They were all born and raised in Shap, England.
Carol met and married the love of her life, Arthur William Brighton Askham, and after the birth of their last child, they decided to move to Africa for work. Mom was so scared of snakes, but she fully supported our dad in his endeavors, and she made it work for our family for a total of four years. With young children, and many animals to look after, she thrived. There, they met lifelong friends that they stayed connected with.
In 1980, the grand move was to Canada. They became Canadian citizens, and mom worked many places, and enjoyed meeting new people along the way. She had such a soft heart for anyone she met.
Carol accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her children and loved being a grandmother, with the spoils that came along with that. One of her biggest accomplishments was to finally obtain her drivers license in 1986. Many hours were spent in the car with our dad teaching her how to drive. She wanted to make sure us kids got our drivers licenses when we turned 16, because it gave her more independence and she thrived on that.
Carol’s most memorable vacation was to the Black Hills and British Columbia with our dad. One thing she loved the most was the sun, any sunny day she was out in the garden or reading a good book. She was a great storyteller; she would summarize the book, so you felt like you read it with her. She also like to write stories about her life growing up in England with her sister June. She had hoped to have them published one day, so they could be enjoyed by others back when life wasn’t so complicated.
Carol loved to garden, a few flowers here and there, but her tomatoes were her prize. The neighbors relished in her home-grown tomatoes, and they would count the days for harvest time. Mom was generous in sharing her bounty with her kids, neighbors, and the corner store.
Our Mom will truly be missed, as she was the staple that held our family together.
