Obituary of Adeline Mae Morley

August 13, 1929 – Selkirk, Manitoba

July 18, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Adeline Mae Morley, a wonderful mother, doting grandmother, and all-around fabulous woman, passed away in the early morning of Thursday, July 18, 2024, after a brief illness.

She was predeceased by her husband John (2013), her sister Joyce (2017), and her brother Tom (2023). She is survived by her three children, Grant (Shirley), Sue (Peter), and Dean (Llana); grandchildren, Kelly, Brent, and Jonathan; as well as her beloved sisters, Beth and Del; and sister-in-law Florence.

Our Mother, as mothers often are, was an amazing person. Born into humble beginnings in rural Manitoba, she was the firstborn of four siblings which honed her to become the devoted, kind, thoughtful, determined and loving caregiver she was. The early hardships in her life also solidified her inner strengths, strong bonds with her family, as well as her sense of humour and wit.

Mom's career was primarily secretarial, but as we all know, as with being a mother, she ran the roost wherever she was. Her early work life was with Great West Life Insurance in Manitoba until children came. Her second (paid) work phase was first at Springbank Elementary School, then as the main secretary at Springbank Junior High, where she stayed for twenty years until her retirement.

Mom had a strong work ethic in everything she tackled, and her hands were seldom idle. An excellent cook, baker, and wine maker, she passed down her love of good food to her family. She also loved to make things, especially anything that involved some sort of threadwork. Cross stitch, embroidery, needlework, knitting and sewing all brightened her many homes as well as her family’s. She also became a maker of jointed bears and filled her home with their joy. When she wasn’t using threads, she was in her garden or planting flowers, which was always bountiful and beautiful.

Mom especially loved playing games and there wasn't a card game she didn't like. Woe betides the one who played against her in cribbage, or Scrabble, or Uno. Nothing pleased her more than beating her opponent; doubly so if she was able to skunk you.

We will, above all, miss Mom's sense of humour, which was whip-snap fast and to the point, as well as her sage outlook on life. Her daily conversations with family, now ended, have left a void in our lives that seems to echo.

So, farewell to our beloved Mother. Be sure to take time to express your love to those who are important to you. Enjoy their company, have a homemade meal together. Be sure to laugh, love, and play some games. End it all with a big hug and say, ‘I love you’.

A Celebration of Adeline’s Life will be held at All Saints Anglican Church (404 Fourth Ave N, Cochrane, AB) on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Following the service, join the family downstairs for fellowship and snacks. Laughter and tears welcome.
