Obituary of Simeon Ross Marsh

August 21, 1929 – Grand Falls, Newfoundland

July 24, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Ross Marsh of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the age of 94 years.

Born in Grand Falls, NL, on August 21, 1929, Ross cherished his roots and carried the spirit of Newfoundland with him throughout his life. Deeply devoted to his faith, he followed in the footsteps of his parents, Major William and Sarah Marsh; who were dedicated members of the Salvation Army. Ross took great pride in serving with the Salvation Army band, where he played the trumpet.

The youngest of seven children, Ross spent most of his career in Ontario’s insurance industry before retiring to Florida and eventually settling in Calgary. Known for his fierce independence, Ross remained self-reliant until the very end.

An enthusiastic sportsman, Ross enjoyed curling, golfing, and even took up skiing at the age of 60. He often took a month off from his retirement in Florida to venture to Knowlton, QC, to ski.

Ross adored his grandchildren. As a loving “Grandpa” to Lara, Nicole, and Alexander, he ensured their visits to Florida were filled with unforgettable experiences, often ending the day with a stop at his favourite ice cream parlour for “Garbage Can” ice cream. He frequently visited Knowlton to attend the kids’ special events, always present to celebrate their achievements.

As a dedicated “Papa” to Helena and William, Ross made daily trips to their elementary school to bring them a treat at recess. He never missed a school play, gymnastics meet, choir performance, or hockey game; always there to cheer them on. To Helena and William, “Papa” was more than a title; it was a symbol of love, care, and endless support.

Ross leaves behind a legacy of love through his daughter Carolyn (John), his grandchildren, Lara, Nicole (David), and Alexander (Sydney), who affectionately called him “Grandpa”; his great-grandson Kove, his daughter Susan, his son Ross, his daughter-in-law Andrea Morris, his grandchildren, Helena and William, who lovingly called him “Papa”; and his stepdaughter Sandra Jeeves. Ross was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen, and his stepdaughter Marjorie Jeeves.

Ross will be laid to rest alongside his parents, Major William and Sarah Marsh.
