Obituary of Alice May Lorentz

January 14, 1933 – Ponoka, Alberta

July 28, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

With profound sadness we announce the passing of a dear sister and aunt; Alice May Lorentz (nee Rodney), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at the age of 91 years. Alice was a strong lady who loved life and was determined to live her life on her terms. She simply refused to let her weak heart dictate the pace she kept.

Alice loved Bingo, jigsaw puzzles, movie nights, and Sunday pancake breakfasts at Phil's with family and friends. She never went anywhere without lipstick and her hair and nails done. She was a straight-shooter and a cowgirl at heart, who spent her first years on the farm. She moved to Calgary at seventeen with fifty dollars in her wallet. One of her first jobs was working for a tack store across from the Stampede grounds. She and her husband Jim loved the Stampede, especially the chucks.

Special mention to Garry and Jane Lorentz who cared for Alice during the years following Jim's death. It was Jim's dying wish to his nephew Garry that he, "look after Alice" once he was gone, and Garry did that. Alice called Garry "her rock". He and Jane cared for her like they were the son and daughter-in-law Alice never had.

Alice is survived by eight sisters and brothers, Eileen, Margaret, Ken (Judy), Bill, Lloyd (Sheila), Jo, Harriet (Julian), and Wayne (Dawna).

Alice and Jim were also survived by many nieces and nephews who knew the kindness and caring of this beautiful couple: Janet, Lee, Rod, Mike, Janice, Ted, Greg, Debby, Susan, Kari, Leif, Kim, Clint, Sasha, Jon, Clayton, Travis, Vicki, Bev, Garry, Darryl, Ivan, Dale and Carla.

Alice was predeceased by Jim, her devoted husband of 50 years, her father Thomas Rodney, and her mother Helen Rodney (nee Sturgess).

A family Graveside Service will be held at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Alice’s family here.
