Obituary of Shirley Gertrude Glass
June 20, 1932 – London, Ontario
September 8, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Shirley Glass of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the age of 92 years.
Shirley was born in London, ON, on June 20, 1932, and lived there throughout her childhood. She was the third of six children, born to Wilfred and Nellie Harding.
As a young adult she pursued a career in nursing, graduating from the Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in London, ON, and afterwards from the University of Western Ontario with a degree/diploma in Public Health.
In the early 1960’s she moved to Calgary, AB, where she later met her husband, Bill Glass. Shirley married Bill in 1967. The family resided in Crossfield and Airdrie, AB, from 1967-1976, when they moved to the Okanagan Valley. Shirley remained in her much-loved Okanagan until 2020, when declining health led to a move back to Calgary to be closer to her children.
Following the birth of her children, Shirley was a stay-at-home parent but remained active in nursing through volunteer work at the Summerland and Penticton hospitals.
Shirley accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her family and especially her grandchildren. She was well-known to all she met for her wry sense of humour and wit.
Shirley enjoyed and spent several years traveling. She worked throughout the world prior to her marriage, including locations such as Afghanistan, Australia and New Zealand. Her travels continued with Bill well into their retirement and often included trips with close friends, Dave and Betty Meriam.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Sarah Glass of Edmonton, daughter Margo Hopkins (Jim Hopkins) of Calgary, and by her son Don Glass (Elizabeth Glass) of Mukilteo, Washington.
She is also survived by her five much loved grandchildren, Shane and Blake Hopkins, Lily, Virginia, and Wyatt Glass; her sister-in-law Anne Harding, and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Shirley was predeceased by her late husband, Bill Glass, in 2017, as well as her five siblings, Jim (Peggy), June (Doug Good), Eldon (Sharon), Bill (Noella) and Gordon (Anne). She often referred to herself in her final years as, “the last of her generation”.
