Obituary of Leigh Ann Hafermehl
August 13, 1951 – Edmonton, Alberta
September 23, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sorrow that we share the news of the passing of our dear mother Leigh Hafermehl (nee Roberts) of Calgary, AB, on Monday, September 23, 2024, surrounded by family at the age of 73 years. She was the beloved sister, mother-in-law, grandma, great-grandma, aunt, cousin, and friend to all who knew her.
Leigh was born in Edmonton, AB, on August 13, 1951. She spent her early years in Loon Lake, SK, until the age of thirteen, when her family moved to Edmonton, AB. Married in 1972, her journey began with the move to Fort McMurray, AB, where she made many friends, joined curling and bowling leagues, and started her family in 1974. Leigh spent ten years in Fort McMurray before relocating with her girls to Calgary in 1984, where she settled.
She had a passion for the Christmas season, and she spread the joy of the season to everyone. Christmas carols, caroling (which always embarrassed her kids), skating, decorating, baking, or looking at Christmas lights were a must for Mom.
Leigh’s most memorable vacations were summers spent in Loon Lake, SK. She loved to swim in the lake, sit on the beach, and visit with all her cousins and family who lived there. She’s always called Loon Lake home. Leigh also enjoyed her trip to Costa Rica to attend her niece Jo-Ann’s wedding. After retirement, Leigh took a trip with her cousin Kim to visit a childhood friend and explore the Yukon and Alaska.
Leigh is survived by her two daughters, Jodi Harding (Terry) of Kelsey, AB, and Jacquie Kowalchuk (Dean) of Calgary, AB; her grandchildren, Ashley Pollock, Matthew Pollock, and Spencer Kowalchuk; and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and James.
She is also survived by her two sisters, Dawne Keith of Kelowna, BC, and Dale Isaac of Stettler, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Leigh was predeceased by her parents, Glenn and Mary Roberts, and sister Lesly Jackson.
