Obituary of Janko Sostar
August 6, 1935 - Jakovci, Croatia
September 25, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Janko on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the age of 89 years.
Janko was born in Jakovci, Croatia, to Nikola and Magda Sostar. He married his wife Anka in 1958 and shortly thereafter they immigrated to Canada.
Almost immediately, Janko found work in construction. Times were difficult for immigrants back then and Janko and Anka tackled many hardships together.
He was always up for adventure in the ways of fishing, boating, camping, and hunting, but was most passionate about spending time with his family.
Janko loved all things Croatian, mostly preparing cured meats and making vino, which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
Later in life, he and Anka discovered a newfound pleasure which became their greatest joy in life… their grandchildren! This made them the happiest grandparents ever.
Janko is survived by his son Johnny (Sophia), his daughter Sandy (Nick), grandchildren, Niko and Maggie Jugovic, and Little-Johnny and Noelia Sostar; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins across Canada, Europe, and South America. He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, and recently his wife of 65 years, Anka.
We will always remember our Janko for his infectious smile, strong work ethic, and unwavering devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren! Mostly, we wish we could go back to our old life… with Dad in it.
We will always love you, Janko!
Rest in Heavenly Peace
Počivaj u Miru Božjem
