Obituary of Derek Heathcote Hutchins

March 10, 1970 – Richmond Hill, Ontario

September 29, 2024 – Okotoks, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Derek Heathcote Hutchins on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at the age of 54 years. After a courageous battle with cancer, Derek passed away peacefully at Foothills Country Hospice, surrounded by his family.

Born in Richmond Hill, ON, Derek moved to Calgary, AB, as a child. He attended Henry Wise Wood High School and then the University of Calgary where he graduated with a history degree. He later relocated to Edmonton, AB, to pursue a career with Northern Hardware as the Branch Manager. After his diagnosis in 2023, he moved back to Calgary to be closer to his partner, family, and friends.

Derek was the eldest son of Ian and Gladys Hutchins, brother to Tracey and Jason (Shannon), a loving father to his son Phoenix Sineath, and the beloved uncle of Ryan, Justin, Gabriel, Chloe, and Paige. He leaves behind his devoted partner, Dani Guille, who loved and cared for him this last year, as well as Nicole Hutchins, with whom he shared many years of family life.

Derek was an avid golfer whether it was outdoors or in. He loved snowboarding, especially with his son and brother’s family. Many miles were travelled to get from Edmonton to Lake Louise every weekend and many wonderful memories were made. He also had a passion for music, discovering new songs, or replaying old favourites; everyone in his life will forever be reminded of him through a special song.

Derek touched many lives. He had a gentle spirit, a great sense of humour, and an unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He was slow to judge, quick to praise, and loved with all his heart. Not only cherished by his family but also by the many friends he had. All were a great source of happiness and comfort to him. Though we mourn his loss, we are comforted by the memories of his love, his laughter, and the example he set for all of us. May he rest in peace, forever in our hearts.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Derek’s family here.
