Obituary of Clarke Johnson

May 11, 1939 – Weyburn, Saskatchewan

September 30, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we announce our loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Clarke Johnson passed away peacefully on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

Born May 11, 1939, in Weyburn, SK, to a farming family, Clarke was a farm boy through and through.

Clarke moved to Calgary, graduating from SAIT in Land Surveying where he developed many lifelong friendships. It was in Calgary where he met Caroline, his best friend and wife of 63 years. Computer classes at the U of A led to careers in the oil industry with Chevron and Imperial Oil/Esso Resources which took him to Texas, Great Britain, Norway, and other locales. Clarke and Caroline moved to Calgary (thank God!) in 1966, where they remained mostly resident with sojourns to Houston, Texas (‘82-83, ‘91-94), and High River (‘94-01).

Clarke was an avid card player, reader, golfer, curler, camper and hiker for most of his life, a talented handyman, and a winter Texan for thirteen years.

You can take the boy out of the farm but not the farm out of the boy. Clarke joined the board of the Bar U Ranch and was chair of the Collections Committee. He also helped his friend Gary Smith with branding, moving cattle, and tending the herd.

As his favourite song says - happy trails to you, until we meet again. So long, pardner!

Clarke is survived by Caroline, his three children Craig, Curt, and Kristen, and their families, ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, and his brother Richard and his family.

A Celebration of Clarke’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
