Obituary of Marie Elizabeth Haugen

October 16, 1935 - Dawson Creek, British Columbia

October 4, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Marie Haugen of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 88 years.

Marie was born in Dawson Creek, BC, on October 16, 1935. As a child, she moved to Torquay and Outlook, SK. She graduated from LCBI High School and entered the School of Nursing at Moose Jaw Union Hospital. After obtaining her R.N. designation, Marie went to Vancouver General Hospital to complete her postgraduate training specializing in becoming an Operating Nurse.

She nursed at Vancouver General Hospital, BC, Montreal Royal Victoria Hospital, QC, Zweibrücken and Lahr in Germany, Holy Cross, Colonel Belcher, and Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary.

In the early ‘60s, she travelled to Europe with friends and was hooked on travelling the world! As a civilian nurse in the CAF in Lahr, Germany, she used Germany as a launchpad for her travels. She travelled the world and touched all the continents except for Australia.

She was a member of the Sons of Norway, sang in the Scandinavian Choir, and volunteered at Heritage Park in Calgary. Marie was proud of her Norwegian heritage and did beautiful Hardanger needlework. She will be most remembered for her independence, her love of travel, and her love of family.

The past seven years Marie’s home was Covenant Care - St. Teresa Place. Her family wish to thank the medical, housekeeping, and dietary staff for their outstanding care, patience, and for treating Marie with respect. Special thanks to Betty, Dr. A. Choksey, pharmacist Anita, and chaplain Greg. We were very fortunate to hire a friend, Simone, from A Friend Indeed. Marie instantly connected with Simone as she was from Germany. She supported Marie in activities, encouraged her to talk about her family, travels, and reminisce about her happy times. Simone was truly an angel - giving quality to Marie’s life!

Marie is survived by three brothers and three sisters: Kathryn Jamieson, Steinar Haugen (Shirley), Ruth Lee, Ken Haugen, Loey Haugen-Svensson (Raini), and Phil Haugen (Trish); as well as fifteen nieces and nephews; thirty great nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins, and friends.

Marie was predeceased by her parents Rev. Arnold K. Haugen and Clara Haugen, sister Dorcas Ekstrand, sister-in-law Gayle Haugen, brothers-in-law, Dr. Clarence Ekstrand, Dr. Geoff Jamieson, and Marv Lee.
