Obituary of Louise Elizabeth Benedict
January 10, 1955 – Manning, Alberta
October 10, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Louise Benedict (Dittrick) of Calgary, AB, on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the age of 69 years.
Louise was born on January 10, 1955, in Manning, AB, to Ruth and Joseph Dittrick and grew up on “the farm” alongside her beloved siblings Murray, Donna, and Audrey. After graduating high school, she suffered a life-changing car accident that led her down an unexpected path. She persevered through a very lengthy recovery with her mother at her side and eventually found employment at the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune. She also found support from local brain injury groups who helped guide her through trying times.
It was suggested to her by one of these groups that she should attend a conference in Calgary that brought together people with varying disabilities. As it happens, that’s where she ended up meeting the love of her life, Lorne, who was there supporting a friend.
They lived a rich life together, having over forty-plus years of marriage, which included living across Alberta and spending a few years in China. A big part of that life was their son Cameron, who was born a few years into their marriage. Louise devoted a great deal of her time to him by volunteering at his schools and supporting his endeavors in art. Recently, art became a big part of her life as well. She found solace and expression in it after joining classes in Clifton House, where she spent her last few years. She enjoyed nothing more than creating and sharing her works with her family, which extended to include her daughter-in-law Nicole and grandson Emmett.
A Celebration of Louise’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street N, Calgary, AB) on Friday, November 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
