Obituary of Kenneth Henry Moen
August 31, 1947 – Edmonton, Alberta
October 21, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Kenneth Henry Moen of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024, at the age of 77 years.
Ken was born in Edmonton, AB, on August 31, 1947. He moved to Calgary in 1965 to attend the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating with an associate’s degree in fine/studio arts in 1969.
Ken was a talented artist who built a career in commercial art over the last fifty years. He worked as a graphic artist, designer, and, most of all, a sign painter for many Calgary companies. He was particularly proud of starting his own business, Hand Painted Signs and Graphics, which is now a lost art in an industry that has primarily turned to digital design. Many of his signs can still be seen throughout Calgary. He was also involved with the local film industry and used his painting skills on the set designs of many films.
He had a keen mind and a curious nature. He was an avid reader, expert crossword puzzler, and a music lover with a well-used stereo and vinyl collection.
Ken loved to travel and spoke fondly of his memories of California and the Oregon Coast. He will be most remembered for his enthusiasm and kindness.
Ken is survived by his brother Brian of Victoria, BC, niece Jennifer Moen (Shaun Port) of Calgary, AB, nephew Jeffrey Moen (Alison Duerden) of Victoria, BC, and many other family and friends.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, Henry Moen and Martha Moen (nee Kaus) of Millet, AB.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Ken’s family here.
In living memory of Ken Moen, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
