Obituary of Frederick Steele Wynne
August 24, 1938 – Stratford, Ontario
October 29, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Frederick Steele Wynne, originally from Stratford, ON, who passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in Calgary, AB, at the age of 86.
Fred was born on August 24, 1938, in Stratford, ON, to parents Gladys and Frederick Wynne Sr. In 1970, Fred married Carol Blazetich of Welland, ON, and the couple soon moved to Calgary, where Fred spent most of his career in insurance as a partner in Nixon/Wynne Adjustors.
A decorated multi-sport athlete and coach in Stratford, Fred continued his involvement in sports in Calgary, both on and off the ice. His greatest impact was as a coach with Calgary Minor Hockey from 1977 to 1990. During this time, he also scouted for the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL and served as President of the Calgary Jr. A Royals of the AJHL. Eventually, Fred stepped away from these commitments to cheer on his sons, John and Teeder, and later his grandsons from the stands. A proud Green Bay Packers shareholder, he kept his favourite Green Bay lanyard and clock close at hand.
Above all, Fred was a family man, deeply invested in the happiness and well-being of family and friends. His generosity was felt by all who knew him, and he was the best man nine times—a true testament to his loyalty and warmth. When asked about it, he would reply, “Technically, it should’ve been ten times, but I was robbed by my friend’s identical twin brother.” He’d wink with a smile and add, “Robbed by genetics!” We will miss you and your stories, Dad.
Even when health challenges arose, Fred’s positivity and strength shone through, teaching us all to keep going no matter what.
Fred is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol, and their three children, sons John (Penny) and Teeder (Sharlie), and daughter Caroline (Mike). He was a beloved grandfather to Ryker and Kody and will be fondly remembered by his nephews, Steve and Ted (Lynn), of Stratford, ON. The family would like to thank Fred’s best friend of over 50 years, John Tsaltas, for his steadfast friendship. Fred was predeceased by his three sisters, Ethel, Verla, and Elaine, and his brother-in-law, John.
The family extends their gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and aides at Rockyview General Hospital, Unit 94, and Southwood Hospice for their compassionate care during Fred’s final days.
A private family service will be held in Stratford, ON, at a later date.
