Obituary of Franklin Bruce Ferguson
October 31, 1927 – Okotoks, Alberta
November 5, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of (Franklin) Bruce Ferguson on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the age of 97, after a brief illness.
Bruce was born in Okotoks, AB, on October 31, 1927, to Franklin Artus Ferguson and Ethel Louise (Atkinson) Ferguson. He was one of nine children and was raised in the Peace River country, for which he had a great love. He attended Grey Eagle School and Berwyn High School. After starting a family and working at several jobs to make ends meet, Bruce returned to school and made many sacrifices to graduate from the University of Alberta School of Law, articling with the Edmonton law firm Reynolds Hurlburt in 1961.
Bruce raised his family and practised law in Camrose and Edmonton. He was devoted to the Shriners, the Masons, Rotary, and Probus Canada, attending meetings wherever he travelled, and worked in many political campaigns. He loved classical music and opera and although he never learned to play an instrument, he was known to whistle with perfect pitch. Bruce is remembered for his great sense of humour and for his many acts of private generosity throughout his life.
Bruce was predeceased by his wife Ruth (Milton) Ferguson, his wife Peggy Fowler Ferguson, and seven of his eight siblings. He is survived by his sister Jean Ferguson; his sister-in-law Joyce Ferguson (wife of his late brother Roy); his children Anne Ferguson Switzer, Blair Ferguson, and Kathy Ferguson McRuer; his son-in-law Glen McRuer; and his beloved granddaughters Michelle Ferguson and Katherine Switzer. He will also be deeply missed by his nieces and nephews, to whom he was devoted.
A Memorial Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
