Condolences
I have had the privilege of getting to know Rainer the last few years as a work colleague. I always appreciated his humour, directness, and "can-do" attitude, and enjoyed our discussions on God and faith.
I will miss him. My sincere condolences to family and friends. Thank you for the honour of being able to participate in his celebration of life.
It was shocking to hear of Rainer’s untimely passing. As part of the Adult Recreational choir, it was a true pleasure to sing with Annemone and Rainer. I recall one performance at the Martha Cohen Theatre where we were exiting the stage; up the theatre steps. Rainer was directly in front of me. He stopped to speak with an audience member and as he did so, extended his leg, directly in my path. Of course I tripped! He spun around and caught me before I fell. One could never doubt Rainer’s sincerity in his apology, it showed in his entire being. Rest peacefully Rainer, the choir of angels will welcome you with open arms.
I was so so sorry to hear of this, my deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his wife, family, friends, colleagues and any one else who had the chance to meet and talk to Rainer. Such an incredible person to work with, always there and with great ideas on how to solves things or make them better. He will be greatly missed by many, but never forgotten. May he rest in peace.
I was very sorry to hear the loss of our dear colleague and was the manager of our team in AHS. He is kind person and definitely a person with sense of humor. Please know my thoughts and prayer are with Rainer's family during this difficult time
My deepest condolences to Rainer's family. I am part of the access team which we interact mostly with Rainer's team. He is a very respected and kind leader. He will surely be missed.
My heart is heavy as I tap this tribute to honour Rainer Maria Oebels…what a grand name for such a splendid gentleman!!! Generous! Hearty! Vibrant! Virile! Intelligent! Humorous! Magnanimous! Gentle! Kind! Spirited! Honest! Fair! Kindred!
Rainer was vastly more than a collection of fitting adjectives. His rolling laughter was as steady and constant as the age old ocean, and his twinkling eyes took on the properties of sparkling stars in the midnight sky whenever he shared a story, or a joke that made us all giggle! Rainer was a beautiful, flickering, but stable flame on a magnificent far reaching candle. He would lend his vast light to brighten up any corner of the world that required light. Or, he would gently let it seep or trickle into spaces quietly that had less need. But my most favourite aspect of this most dear friend was as remarkable as he was. No matter how much time was spent chatting and laughing with him, be it a prolonged period of time, or something relatively short, I always felt better AFTER visiting with Rainer, than before we met up! Such a rare occurrence! Such a rare and glorious individual!
He was consistently volunteering his time, energy, talent, and ideas to ARC, the choir he lent his sonorous bass to. Rainer would good naturedly, diligently, efficiently, and tidily set up and tear down sets prior to and after performances had ended. He was actively involved in rehearsals and sectionals, and his positive attitude and friendly demeanour encouraged all to join right in!
I am blessed to have known Rainer and Annemone as long as I have. Heaven welcomes a new, incredibly bright soul into its fold. I will miss Rainer tremendously. But I will celebrate his joi de vie, his jolly wit, and his indomitable spirit for the rest of the days I remain on this wonderful planet! God Speed, Rainer!
Love Vic
To Anomene and family , My deepest condolences to you and your family. Ill always remember Rainer as having a great sense of humor , always willing to help out ARC in anyway he could especially setting up risers and sond systems. I loved the sound of his bass voice which I know he is singing with the angels in heaven. Im sure that all that knew him will have a special place in our hearts. Take Care. Terry Chang
I am deeply saddened by Rainer's sudden passing. Rainer and I shared a cube wall at AHS for a few years. Listening to him, he was always calm, direct and grounded with a wonderful sense of humor. We shared many stories od visits to Germany, of family and of adventures (we included the Glenmore Tr commute in rush hour as on of those shared adventures). He helped me sort out my Dad's German pension when my German legalese was lacking. I will cherish these fond memories always.
My sincerest condolences to Rainer's family, friends, and colleagues. He touched all who knew him, and he will be missed.
Rest easy Rainer.
May he rest in peace.
Lothar (King)
My deepest condolences to the Oebels family, and to Annemone, my warmest embrace. Rainier was always there with a smile and his sense of humour, always willing to help anyone who needed it. I will miss your beautiful singing voice, our whole choir will. Rest in peace Rainier.
I’m deeply saddened to hear about Rainer’s passing. I had the privilege of being part of his team in the Directory Services stream at AHS. He was always approachable and carried such a positive attitude. His sense of humor was infectious, and he had a unique way of tackling challenges. Rainer was incredibly fair and never hesitated to share his honest thoughts on any matter. He will be truly missed. May he rest in peace.
My heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Though I only knew Rainer for a few years, it never felt that way during our conversations. He was incredibly humble, supportive, and easygoing. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
I know Rainer since 2007, and he has been a good colleague, always ready to fix issues and to teach things.
My deepest condolences to all family and friends. We will miss him.
Lori and I were so sad to hear of the sudden passing of Rainer Oebels. Our deepest condolences go out to Annemone, their family, and friends.
We met Rainer (and Annemone) at choir (ARCS) and had many memorable moments performing together, chatting and working backstage with him. What a generous spirit he had. Always willing to help out at choir and to engage with members in friendly and humorous banter. I still remember tethered to two long planks with Rainer and others, singing a pirate song while stomping out the beat for an upcoming performance, or singing the parody, Beethoven's Wig, with Rainer dressed in full Baroque clothing and wig. What a wonderful deeply resonant bass voice he had.
We loved your chest lifting laugh, Rainer, and will miss you very much.
Liebe Annemone,
Rainer was such a decent, lite hearted and friendly person. He was a mentor with decades of experience and a steady hand. His passing is a loss to so many. Our sincere condolences to Rainer’s family.
Rainer was one of the smartest and nicest people I had had a privilege of working with and I am just stunned by how unfair his sudden passing is. I was hoping for him to spend his retirement with his family, jet-setting around the world and sharing his stories with his friends... He will be missed.
My condolences to the entire Oebels family. I always enjoyed Rainer's humour and wit while we worked on the same team at Husky Energy. He will be missed.
Annemone and all of Rainer’s family in Canada and Germany, I am so saddened to hear this news. I shall always remember hiking in to Mount Assiniboine with you. My sincere condolences for your loss. May peace and love surround you as you grieve. Lisa Hurst-Archer
I didn't know Rainer, but only through hiking that day with Anemone and the group on the mountain.
It was lovely to read about him in all the kindnesses of the obits.
We are all very saddened by his sudden passing on the mountain. A shock for us all.
Our deepest condolences to all his family and friends. I'm sure he will be missed.
Surprisingly only just met Rainer in the past few months. Judging from everyone's comments wish I would have met him much sooner.
My sincere condolences! Rainer was good friend and I’m still in shock. We shared love for archery. He will be missed.
I’m just broken hearted and shocked over Rainer’s passing, I can’t believe it. He was part -a big part- of the ARCS Choir family, with his great bass voice, his sense of humour, his smile and glint of laughter in his eyes. He was a wonderful supporter of the ARCS Choir, on stage and backstage, you could count on him, helping out wherever & whenever he could and singing his heart out during our performances!
My condolences to Annemone and his family here and back home. Canada was the very lucky recipient of his love and energies when he immigrated here! There are so many that were privileged to have been a part of his life no matter how small and I’m sure he’ll be missed terribly.
I was so sad and heartbroken to hear of Rainers passing! I met Rainer shortly after he started with AHS and have had a great working relationship as well we have had allot of chats about his love for his former visits to NL while working in the oil sector. I always promised to bring cooked cod tongues on my next visit to Calgary however it never seemed to happen. I did however ensure I brought him Newfie made Codfish cakes on his retirement party to which he was very happy for! It brings a smile to my face that I was able to do that one little thing for him! He was a fantastic person and he will be so missed! Rest in Peace my friend! Condolences to Rainers family and friends!
I am so sorry to hear of Rainer's passing. I knew him through the choir ( ARC) where he sang beautifully but also volunteered selflessly behind the scenes. My condolences to Annemone and family. RIP Rainer.
So sorry to hear about Rainer's passing !
I'll miss his candor and his humor. He was a great colleague and mentor and enjoyed so much working with him ! May he rest in peace !
My thoughts are with everyone who's grieving, I wish them courage and peace in this time of mourning.
I was very sad to hear about the passing of Rainer. Having known him for nearly 6 years he was one of the people I fully trusted when it came to talking about Identity as his knowledge was immense. That said I also fondly recall all the non-work conversations we had especially about Germany. To say he will be missed is an understatement and my condolences go out to his family and friends.
I am so saddened to hear of Rainer’s passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Annemone and your large extended family, here in Canada and in Germany.
My prayers and thoughts are with Rainer's family and friends. He was a kind and gentle man, always respectful of others.
It was a big shock when we heard the news of Rainer's demise and a great loss, to not only to his family but to the whole Identity team. He was such nice person and true gentleman and will be remembered fondly.
On behalf of Alberta Health Services leadership and staff, we would like to send our deepest condolences to his wife Annemona, their children and grandchildren You are so blessed to have Rainer as your family patriarch as he was a “force to be reckoned with” who also had the kindest and biggest heart.
Our IT portfolio was so lucky to have him lead the team for 6 years and then he moved to a casual position since last summer so that he could ease into retirement and still have the freedom to travel and work when he wanted. Over the past couple of years when he was travelling around Europe seeing family and friends, he would send a few of us pictures of his adventures… to make us a little jealous of course but to also just share in the happiness of his and his wife’s adventures.
While Rainer was not a hands-on healthcare clinician like many of his children and their spouses, he was extremely passionate about helping to make the clinicians access technology more efficient and saw himself as contributing to healthcare delivery in a small way from the IT end. He spoke of his family all the time and was an extremely proud husband, father and grandpa.
We all count ourselves so fortunate to have had the pleasure to work with Rainer, learn from him, and just enjoy his company. Rainer was a wonderful blend of a leader, IT expert, mentor, adventurer and creative person.., and the world is a little more boring without him in it. He will be greatly missed….. Rest in peace on your mountains in the sky Rainer!
My sincere condolences to Annemone and all those who loved Rainer. I worked with Rainer on several occasions and I'm sad to hear this news. My thoughts are with you during this very difficult time.
Tragic and very sad news. Rainer was a great mentor to many of us IT professionals over the years. My deepest sympathies, thoughts and many prayers to the entire Oebels family. He will be deeply missed.
I'm so so sorry for your loss Annemone, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I am devastated to hear the news. Rainer was one of my closest work colleagues, but I always considered him to be so much more. He was my friend.
Rainer exemplified kindness, always cared deeply about doing the right thing, and truly supported the people behind the work. I am a better person for having known him, and I miss him terribly.
Annemone and family - Rainer often spoke fondly of you, sharing stories that reflected just how proud he was of you all.
With deepest sympathy,
Andrea

Carolle Lafleur
I am so sorry to hear of Rainer’s sudden passing.
I have many wonderful memories of time spent together in the Adult Recreational Choirs where both Rainer and Annemone were valued members.
Rainer was always ready to help and was front and centre when I got stuck in an elevator during one of our shows.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Annemone and family.
Rainer will be greatly missed.
Go high upon that mountain my friend. Rest in peace.
Sharon Stiles
Rainer was a good friend and colleague. We met while working at Novell in the early 2000s and managed to stay connected while our roles, companies and work locations changed. It was not long ago that we met Annemore and Rainer for a wonderful lunch in the Columbia Valley to catch up. Although he has left all too soon, I hope there is some comfort knowing he passed doing what he loved. He will be missed.
Rainer was an excellent bass singer and a great supporter of ARC. He always stepped up to volunteer his time - particularly for shows and the annual talent show. RIP
I was saddened to hear of Rainer's passing. He gave so much of himself to ARC. He was and Anemine were valued members of our choir community. Anemone and family, my heart is with you. I know you will keep Rainer in your hearts forever more.
It’s hard to think of a world without Rainer’s resonant singing voice, the mischievous glint in his eye, his wry sense of humour and astute view of the world. I will miss him more than I can say. My heart aches for Annemone and their children but I know Rainer will be always with them.
Anemone, Sebastian and the rest of your wonderful family
Our hearts are feeling your loss. We enjoyed our many times with Rainer over the years. We enjoyed his friendliness and his huge talents in the choir. You will all be in our prayers and thoughts as you learn to negotiate a world he has left. You all now have a new guardian angel.
Jo-Ann and Bruce Bailey.
Very sad to hear of Rainer's passing. My condolences to Annemone and family. I loved singing with him, and just enjoying his company. He always challenged me on many fronts, but always with a gleeful glint in his eye - I will definitely miss his great mix of humour and candour.
With warm regards and sympathy,
Dennis Johnston
My heart felt condolences to Rainer’s family.
I have cherished memories of working with Rainer. He was always so kind and funny. Approachable and incredibly smart, he was an informal mentor to many.
He will be missed by everyone that had the opportunity to cross paths with him. Jodine N
It is a heavy heart knowing that Rainer passed away, a cherished friend, mentor, and an extraordinary soul who touched countless people. Rainer departed this world leaving behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to those he cared for and guided. He was not just a mentor but a beacon of inspiration, someone who saw potential where others saw limits, and who offered guidance with both grace and patience. His ability to uplift, encourage, and empower others was unparalleled, and his wisdom will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rainer was a source of unwavering support and boundless warmth. His laughter could simply light up a room, and his compassion knew no bounds. Whether through moments of joy or challenges, Rainer stood and still as a steadfast pillar, always ready with a kind word or a listening ear. Though his absence leaves an ache in my heart, I take solace in the memories I hold with him and the lessons he left. Rainer’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the love he spread so generously.
Missing you my friend, you will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
