Obituary of Doug Owen

February 4, 1942 – Kamloops, British Columbia

January 18, 2025 – Calgary, Alberta

Doug Owen, beloved husband of Joyce Owen, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the age of 82.

Born in Kamloops, Doug lived in various locations in BC, the Yukon, where he met his wife, Joyce, and Alberta where he raised his family. Doug graduated from SAIT initially studying aeronautical engineering before pivoting to becoming a journeyman electrician, power engineer, and building operator. This journey culminated in being the head of maintenance at Banker’s Hall in downtown Calgary. He was particularly proud of his work with Brookfield Properties.

Doug loved being outside, whether it was sitting on a patio, camping with his family, hiking, biking, or sitting on a beach. Doug was never happier than when his knees were tanned. When his children were younger, he coached hockey and soccer and was greatly loved by the young athletes he worked with. He was particularly proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments.

One of Doug's greatest passions was travel. He enjoyed going on cruise vacations and exploring new destinations. One of his most memorable trips was a cruise through the Panama Canal with Joyce and two close friends, which he would often eagerly show photos and regale stories about upon returning.

Left to cherish his memory are his son David (and wife Melissa) and daughter Tara (and husband Todd), as well as his two grandchildren, Teddy and Alex. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Owen, his parents, George and Sadie Owen, and his sister, Suzanne Carter.

A celebration of Doug's life will be planned for the spring, and details will be announced at a later date.

Doug will always be remembered for his irreverent sense of humour, his likable and easy-going nature, and his expert barbequing skills. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Doug's memory directly to a charity of your choice.
