Obituary of Richthofen Se Tzi CHIN

November, 27, 1951 – China May, 28, 2014 – Calgary, AB Richthofen Chin was born in China on November 27th, 1951. He immigrated to Canada at the young age of 19 with nothing but a suitcase and as he puts it, a good wife, where he worked at CP Rail and odd jobs until establishing business ventures of his own. Rick led a successful and hard working life after settling in Calgary, most notably with Reliable Courier Service. In the 1980’s, he met a small shop owner named Bill and the two clicked over a common interest in models and aviation. Eventually Rick took over the shop and throughout the years became an integral part of the modelling and military history community, one of the last of a vanishing breed of proprietors who ran small model shops with a dedicated passion. Known to his colleagues as Uncle Rick, he made a significant impact on many generations of modellers in Calgary, creating clubs such as the Rocky Mountain Model Club. More recently, Rick started GOMB (Gathering of Model Builders) with the vision of good friends coming together for laughter, beer and wings, where he was known to tell a story or two. Rick was a patient and generous man with a kind heart, always thinking of what he could do for others before being asked. His passion for model building combined with his giving spirit led him to build two replica CF-18 fighter jets for the Capt. Kevin Naismith Memorial Room and his family in 2010. He was also known to teach the younger generation the value of a hobby, giving out kits to kids and encouraging people to bring it back built within two weeks and it’s free! When Rick wasn’t busy with a model or camera in his hand at an air show, he loved crooning out Frank Sinatra hits at Karaoke, watching Chinese movies with his wife, teaching his children traditions and culture (even if it meant travelling to Vancouver) and most of all, playing endlessly with his grandchildren. Rick will be truly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Besides his loving wife Stella, Rick is survived by his two sons, Jason (Marina) and Anthony (Sarah) and daughter Doreen; grandchildren Tia and Bridgette; and sister Cindy (Jeff). He is also remembered by numerous in laws, nieces, nephews and even grand nieces/nephews. Funeral Services were held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service followed at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
