Obituary of Phyllis Kate WHITEFORD

16 November, 1920 – Dovercourt Bay, England 7 February, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta Phyllis decided that enough was enough on 7 February, 2014. Phyllis was born and grew up in England on the coast, where her favourite pastime was swimming. She trained as a secretary and worked for a number of firms in England and Canada. Phyllis met her husband Jim during WWII. He had come to England with the Royal Canadian Engineers to train for combat in the war, but met her one night while he was singing at a concert. They married in 1943 and lived in Bocking until Jim was deployed to Sicily. After the war, Phyllis moved to Olds, AB as one of the War Brides and lived with her Scottish-Canadian family. Jim joined her six months later. They moved to Calgary where Phyllis gave birth to Gail. Phyllis was one of the founding members of the Alberta War Brides. Eventually she worked as an Executive Secretary and retired from SAIT as the Executive Secretary to the President. Upon Jim’s retirement in 1974, they travelled back to Europe and spent two years touring in a motor home. Phyllis loved travel and for a number of years they travelled through the United States and Canada, as well as Hawaii, Mexico, and most of Europe. She loved her daughter and granddaughter, good books and her nightly gin martini. But mostly she loved the sea. She always talked about returning there. We shall obey her wishes and take a trip to the English coast that she loved so much and return her to her beloved English Sea later this year. Phyllis was a lady by all definitions of the word. She will be remembered and she will be missed. Phyllis slipped away quietly, as was her style, leaving behind her daughter Gail; granddaughter Allison; brother Derek (Maureen); niece Franki (Bob) and sister-in-law Jenny; close family friends Stan and Shirley; as well as a myriad of friends and family. She was predeceased by her newborn Anne; her husband Jim; and her sister Sally as well as her parents. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, buy a nice bottle of your favourite drink and raise a glass in a toast to Phyllis.
