Condolences
I am sadden by the great loss of beloved Betty. And thinking about you Herman, your family and all the people Betty inspired. You and Betty, together accomplished so much and touched so many hearts with your kindness and wisdom. It is a different planet without her. But it is also a better place because of what she did for so many. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Loving kindness,
Aleksandra
My thoughts are for you to have God’s peace as you go through this difficult time.
Her-man and family. We were saddened by the loss of your sweet Betty. It was a pleasure to get to know Betty and her wonderful family. You were all so supportive and so willing to work with the staff for your wife’s/moms best interest to help her along her journey with dignity and love. It was really interesting to read Bettys obituary …..to see all the great things Betty accomplished…and you too Herman. Your a really special couple and you raised a great family. Thinking of you all.
Karen, Brenda and all the staff on Sunshine point
It was with sadness I read the announcement on Facebook. I pray that God will comfort you with His peace as you mourn.
Dear the Vanderburg Family,
May the love and blessings of our Heavenly Father constantly give your peace and understanding.
Betty has no more pain and can remember everything now. She is looking down from heaven at you all.
Betty and Herman, together you made such a beautiful team. Thank you both so much for what you have meant to us, and to so many others, through your generous sharing of your love and wisdom.
What a huge gap Betty has left behind! We are comforted to know she is safely with Jesus right now, and that we will all be with her again. We are thinking so often of your family, Herman, and the difficult times ahead as you grieve her leaving.
Love and hugs, Kathy & Jerry
Dear Herman and family,
We are so saddened by the loss of our sweet Betty. She was always there with a hug and a smile. She lit up any room she entered. We are sorry not to be there to share the celebration of such a special member of our family. She will be missed. God Bless all of you on this sad occasion.
Peace be with you….
Charline and John…
I will treasure every memory I have of my Aunty Betty. Dear Uncle Herman, Madelene, Roland, Ian, Geoff, Mark, Marieka, and your families, I wish you much thankfulness and joy amidst the tears tomorrow as you celebrate her life. I wish I could be there with you. Love to you all, Joylene
I was so sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. I was so thankful for her mentoring along with Herman’s when I crossed the threshold of the Sonshine Center to do the first ever Practicum there where you both introduced me to a loving God. Betty and I had another opportunity to work together at the Louise Den Center some years later. I remember your loving family, your loving hearts and your joy in serving the Lord. May you all be blessed and comforted at this time.
Love and hugs from,
Dianne Federation
I would like to extend my condolences to Uncle Herman and my cousins on the loss of Aunt Betty.
I recall how she was always willing to be there to listen and give a smile or a hug to anyone that needed one. She will be remembered fondly by a lot of people.

Dear Herman, Madelene, Roland, Ian, Geoff, Mark, Marieka and family members:
It is about 25 years ago that Betty and Herman moved to Ontario to be closer to grandma V. and Grandma G., the time that we at Zion C.R.C. Oshawa welcomed you in our midst.
We have been reminiscing about the years that you lived amongst us and are so grateful for the love, support, encouragement and prayers we received from the Vanderburg’s; we made friends for life…. The friendship continued even after you returned to Calgary; it was so hard to let you go in 1998.
When I think about Albert Schweitzer’s quote, as mentioned below, it was that flame I personally encountered through Betty’s encouragement, she had the ability to rekindle the inner spirit as she walked beside her clients.
“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.” Albert Schweitzer
Betty, today I personally thank God for how through your inspiration you gave me wings to fly…
Today, at Zion Church, Betty was remembered with love, Herman and family you were lifted up in prayer; as a church we grieved the loss of a friend who meant so much to many of us.
Last week’s phone call shook us up, learning that Betty breathed her final breath; it reminded me of the poem (Face Book in December 2015), written by
ds. Jaap Zijlstra before he breathed his last breath
VERWACHTING
Als de dag begint te doven
en de zon mij niet meer ziet,
als de schemering gaat komen
en ik stil word van verdriet,
als de nacht valt en mijn vogel
niet meer opdaagt met een lied
na mijn duisternis Uw licht,
na mijn zwijgen Uw gedicht.
Adieu my friend; as you followed in the Master’s footsteps, you ran your race with courage and with deep loving concern in and through the power of His love.
Madelene, Roland, Geoffrey, Ian, Mark and Marieka,
I know your mom will be dearly missed and will always be in your hearts. She was a wonderful inspiration to many and I know Madelene, you always spoke very highly of her .
Thinking of you all.
Betty will be dearly missed by so many people. I ask for God’s continued healing and peace to the family and to all of us she leaves behind. We will rejoice when we are reunited!
En mi nombre y el de mi familia expresamos nuestras condolencias por el fallecimiento de su queridisima madre, deseando de todo corazón que Dios le ayude Rolando a soportar tan grande ausencia. Dios le de mucha fortaleza….
Dearest Madelene; I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. What a life she lived! She will be missed by many, but her legacy of kindness and service to Our Lord will live on in her children and grandchildren.
You will all be in my thoughts and prayers
As you pass through this challenging time of letting go and celebrating a life magnificently lived.
So sorry that my current hospitalization prevents me from joining you in person for the celebration of her life.
Dear Herman and family
My deepest condolences with the passing of your dear Betty. No matter when or where our paths would cross over the decades Betty always had a huge smile, a warm hug and a genuine interest in “what’s new”. She was an inspiring co-worker during our time together at Adoption: A Loving Choice. Unfortunately I am out of town and will miss Betty’s celebration of life. May God bring you comfort during your time of grief.
We were so sad to hear of Betty’s passing. From the time we had the sincere honour to know and love her, she was always a bright light in our lives. She always met us with hugs and such sincere love in her every thought and deed. I was talking to the Board at Sonshine yesterday about Betty and the incredible legacy that she left. I was thinking of each and every person that she helped both directly and indirectly. As I was thinking of this, I pictured each and every person walking down the street and – I would imagine to her surprise-it would be thousands. The work she started at Sonshine among other places- lives on in so many ways and I don’t know that she every truly appreciated the impact she and her amazing heart, strong faith and true love had in each and every step she took in her wonderful life. We send you all our love and prayers as you grieve this remarkable woman. It was a true honor knowing her. God Bless
The Vander Ziel’s (Philip and Sandy)
We thank the Lord when we think of Betty’s life. What ripples of grace and love God created through her smile and energy and determination throughout the years! May our Lord’s peace rest on Herman and all the family.
Dear Herman and Family.
Our condolences with the passing of Your wife, mother, and grandmother. We wish you the strength of the Lord if you go through these days of preparations and of the funeral itself. Then, after all that, the settling in into a life without Betty. She leaves a big, empty place. But we also may be thankful for what the Lord gave us in her.
On a personal note: Betty is my full cousin, she was 8 months older than I. We spent many happy times together. We were always kidding about the fact that she was always ahead of me, and I could never catch up. Now she has done it again: she went ahead of me and she is enjoying all the beautiful things that are awaiting all of us…. I cannot be anything else than happy for her!
Herman and Family Members
I am so sorry for your loss (far too young) Betty was always so friendly and interested in what you might have to say. She will be missed!
Allen and I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to you all. We were sad to hear of Betty’s passing. She was an amazing woman and true source of inspiration to us. We so appreciated Betty and Herman’s encouragement and support to us over the years we were in Calgary. Praying for strength as you walk this journey together.

During a very dark time of my life, Betty and Herman offered me their hospitality. During my stay in Etobicoke, they showed me what love and warmth can accomplish. Although we didn’t understand each other at times, I owe her and Herman a great deal. Betty was always in for a good laugh. In the past, I sted quite a few tears with her, and now, I’ll shed them for her.
My thoughts are with you Herman, Roland, Ian, Geoffrey, Mark and Marieka.
Herman, Madelene, Roland, Ian, Geoff, Mark, Marieka and families, sorry for your loss of Betty. She was a loving and caring woman. Thinking about and praying for all of you.
Love Linda
Thinking of you Madelene, as you venture onward with family, on the Celebration of Life for your Mom – Angie.
Dear Vanderburg Family, I want to express my most sincere condolences to all of you in what I know is a very difficult time. Betty will forever be in my memory as such a wonderful and caring lady. Although I had not seen Betty in a number of years, I feel extremely blessed to have known her. I will always remember Betty as someone that welcomed me into your family’s home and made me feel like so much more than just Mark’s friend. I hope you can all draw strength from God, from your very strong family unit, and from the memories of the beautiful person that Betty was. My thoughts, prayers and love is with all of you.
