Doug was born at home on the farm during a blustery spring snowstorm. He had a wonderful childhood, farming with his family and fostering his love of inventing and building all manner of things with his brothers Jerry and Brian. Doug married Beth Hayes on December 27th, 1962. They moved to Thompson, Manitoba and set up their first automotive garage ’Community Service’. Doug and Beth had their sons Grant and Dean and moved to Edmonton in 1972 to manage an automotive shop there. Great friendships were forged, and many camping trips and family holidays were shared with the DeBelsers, Grahams and Watts. In 1977 the family moved to Calgary, where Doug’s entrepreneurial spirit flourished. He created National Transmission as well as a number of other successful ventures. Along with world travel and time with family, Doug had a passion for flying. He purchased a Piper Comanche, and ‘RGH’ took he and the family on many flights, including trips to Mexico and the NWT. Doug grew up with a love for shooting sports and hunting, which lead to his discovery of Sporting Clays – a pastime and community he passionately became involved in. Doug served on a number of boards and associations and helped grow the game he loved. He competed both nationally and internationally, and spent many great days out on ‘the course’ with Beth. Doug became a great instructor and helped many athletes along the way. He especially loved competing with his grandson Dexter, who was his shooting partner at many events.
