Obituary of Elizabeth Joan GARTNER

December 11, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Elizabeth Gartner of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 at the age of 74 years after being diagnosed with cancer just two months prior.

Besides her loving husband, Geoff (Gottfried) Gartner, Betty is survived by her children, Janet Gartner (Eric Van Iersel) and Craig Gartner (Michele Fugiel Gartner); grandchildren, Henry, George, Sofia and Jack, all of whom she adored. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara Rimell (Phil) and Margaret Sloan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Katherine Belafi, Michael Gartner (Diane); and many nieces and nephews and numerous other extended family and friends.

Betty was born in New Westminster, BC, in 1946 and grew up in White Rock. She graduated from Semiahmoo High School early, having skipped a grade. In 1967 she moved to Montreal, QB, for Expo where she met Geoff, and on May 8, 1971, they were married. It was there that she and Geoff had two children, Janet and Craig. In 1978 the family moved to Calgary, AB where she made many friends and where she and Geoff remained, splitting their time in later years between Calgary and Oceanside in White Rock.

Betty enjoyed travelling with her family and she and Geoff saw a remarkable number of place in Canada, United States and abroad. She spent many happy summers at Green Lake with her family, parents and sister’s family. She was an avid reader, and instilled a love of reading and learning in her children and grandchildren. She loved coffee with the girls and wine with family and friends. She was a dedicated and loving mother and an adoring and devoted grandmother.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place.  If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of one’s choosing and by hugging a loved one.
