Obituary of Anne Marie Mahoney
October 11, 1954 - Halifax, Nova Scotia
September 30, 2023 - Rocky View County, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Anne Marie Elizabeth Mahoney, 68, Cochrane Alberta, on September 30th, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Marie (nee Charlton) and Peter Mahoney Sr.
A proud Irish-Haligonian, she would always say that she received her best education at the Halifax Convent of The Sacred Heart. A brilliant life-long learner, she started her university career in Halifax at Mount Saint Vincent University, graduating from Dalhousie University with a B.Sc. (Hons-Psychology) in 1976, and completing her Master's and Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Calgary through the 1980's. She went on to practice for many years in Alberta as well as at The Abby Lane in Halifax Nova Scotia, lovingly making a huge difference in the lives of innumerable people; she was in practice at the time of her passing.
She gave presentations and workshops nationally and internationally, welcomed by many psychology departments, schools of psychiatry, and Buddhist Centres alike; Anne was a distinguished lecturer and facilitator. She was a world traveler, visiting Buddhist Centres of Study and Devotion in many countries, spreading her knowledge and wisdom as she accumulated more from others.
Anne’s testament to love all animals, and her devotion to her own 5 horses, 2 dogs and cat, is evident in their preplanned caregivers’ arrangements.
Her greatest love was her family and friends, distributed over generations, devoted to the care of her long-lived loved ones, and to the absolute joy of watching her beloved grandchildren turn from babies to adults, whom she loved unconditionally. To know her was to love her - her curiosity, her caring, and her delight at the goodness and worth of others.
She could take apart a lobster before you knew it was boiled.
She is survived by her daughter; Sarah Elizabeth Dorey (Don) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, grandchildren Elizabeth, Madeline and Alexander; sister Mary Mahoney MacDonald (Bruce Avery) of Maine; brother Peter Mahoney (Tracy) of Dartmouth; nephews Mike, Christopher, Colin, Jeffrey, and niece Katie and several loving cousins.
A special thank you and gratitude to her many loving friends in Alberta for their insurmountable support and assistance to Anne’s family at this time of sorrow.
Cremation has taken place at her request.
