Obituary of John Charles Bateson

October 16, 1942 – Assiniboia, Saskatchewan

June 2, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of John Charles Bateson of Calgary, AB, on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at age 81 years.

John is survived by his loving wife Darlene, and his children, Greg, Wendy (James) Bolen, Leanne, and Darren (Alison). Family was so important to John, and he delighted in his grandchildren, Curtis (Rachel), Jean (Dave), Kelly, Julie (Joe), Georgia (Josh), and Ben; and his great-grandchildren, James and Eleanor. John’s gentle spirit is reunited in heaven with his parents, brothers, and oldest grandchild Charles.

John was born on October 16, 1942, in Assiniboia, SK, growing up in Congress, SK, settling in Regina, SK, and retiring to Kelowna, BC. He was proud to obtain his Bachelor of Education and Certificate of Educational Administration, attending night classes while teaching full-time, and raising a growing family. He went on to teach math for thirty years, sharing his love of numbers with thousands of students.

An avid sports fan, John always cheered for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Blue Jays, and he never missed an opportunity to watch a curling match.

John was always up for adventures, large and small. His most memorable was a grand tour across Canada and the United States, a hot air balloon ride, and even a try at paragliding.

He will be fondly remembered for being quick to laugh, always ready with a teasing comment, never turning down ice cream, and giving wonderful hugs.

We thank his excellent care team at the Peter Lougheed Centre for their compassion and support. 

A Memorial Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Bateson’s service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
