Obituary of Carol Margaret Mattern
October 8, 1953 - Rocky Mountain House, Alberta
July 23, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Carol Margaret Mattern, beloved mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the age of 70 years in Calgary, AB.
Carol leaves behind her daughter Christina (Ryan), and grandson Alexander. She is survived by her three brothers, Rick (Mary), Don (Karen) and Pat (Joan); and her three sisters, Marilyn (Joe), Fay (Jon), and Linda; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Carol was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Rose, and her dog Lily.
Born in Rocky Mountain House, AB, in 1953, Carol spent most of her life in Calgary. Her interest in people and what makes them tick, as well as a deep love of reading and writing, motivated her to pursue bachelor’s degrees in Sociology and English from the University of Calgary. She was proud to be a public servant for over 35 years and held a range of positions that focused on creating opportunities for people. From immigration to employment counselling, Carol’s dedicated efforts have touched and improved many lives.
She was passionate about our world and the people in it. Carol never shied away from standing up for her values and her quick wit and tongue made her a formidable debater. You knew not to argue with her about human rights, politics, or the right way to recycle and compost.
She loved to travel, and all her travel companions trusted her to research the best deals and sights. When at home, she enjoyed being in the garden, reading, and trying different arts and crafts with her sisters.
Those who knew her were inspired by her love of family. Her proudest accomplishment in life was raising her daughter, and it was divine intervention that led to her moving in with her little family in 2021. Watching her grandson grow, getting high-fives and fist bumps, reading to him, and snuggling on the couch brought her the greatest joy in her final years.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and care workers Carol met along her journey, especially those in Unit 42 at the Foothills Hospital and the staff at Agape Hospice for their care and support during Carol's last days.
