Obituary of Douglas Arthur Broderick

September 14, 1958 – Regina, Saskatchewan

July 25, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Our beloved family member Doug, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at the age of 65 years. Doug was the last born of seven children to Lucy and Jackson.  Baby blue eyes, dimples, and a devil-may-care attitude, coupled with a smile that could light up a room were his trademarks. Having fun, making mischief, and living life with few regrets was his stock in trade. He had several nicknames, but Duke was the one that stuck and was attached to him in his adult life.

Doug loved people and people loved Doug back. Life, to Doug, was meant to be well lived and experienced; even if it meant you took some knocks and got a few bruises along the way. He was a gifted athlete who played sports like he was six inches taller and thirty pounds heavier. He got his nose bloodied, but after the competition, his opponents always knew they had tangled with a bobcat that fought like a cougar.

Laughter to Doug was as important as the air we breathe. At a party, people always gravitated towards Doug because he always seemed to be where the most fun was going on.

Doug’s success in business was built on the pillars that his parents taught him; you treat everyone in life with courtesy, kindness, and respect. Simply, Doug connected and cared for people; and people liked and trusted Doug back. As a result, Doug built a successful career in sales and management, and he was a critical part of the success of his family business, Trail Appliances. To the growing staff at Trail, he provided knowledge, support, leadership, and energy. The family felt privileged to have worked with Doug for over 45 years and all benefited from his competitive and enthusiastic spirit. Doug was a proud Calgarian and Albertan who strongly supported his company’s efforts in supporting and giving back to the community.

His sudden passing was a shock to family and friends alike. His energy and love of life should have easily carried his body forward for another twenty or thirty years, but sadly that’s not the case. His departure leaves all that knew and loved him shattered by tears at one moment, and rollicking in laughter in the next; as memories of Doug and fun go hand in hand and are inseparable. If Doug could speak today, he would undoubtedly apologize to all for having to leave the party just as it was getting started.

Doug leaves behind in this world what he valued most in life, his family.  Left to grieve are his cherished wife Morgan, his sons, Josh (Jessica) and Sean (Lindsey); stepsons, Levi and Devan (Taylin); grandchildren, Aubry, London, August, Mara, Isabella, Sophia, and Penny; his sister Jane (Rod), brothers, John (Louise), Mike (Pat), Pete (Deb), Paul (Dee), and twin David (Alice); his father-in-law Ken, his inseparable pooch Charlie, and a myriad of nephews and nieces who adored Doug.

Rest well Doug. The party will carry on, it just won’t be the same without you.

A private family service will be held in Doug’s honour.
