Barry Stonehouse

Obituary of Barry Gordon Stonehouse

November 28, 1946 – Virden, Manitoba

September 11, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Barry Stonehouse, beloved husband of Sharon Steenson, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the age of 77 years.

Growing up surrounded by family and friends, Barry had a zest for life and adventure, joining the Canadian Armed Forces in 1964. He was posted in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC; Borden, ON; Val-d'Or, QC; Zweibrücken, Germany; Dana, SK; Cold Lake, AB; Penhold, AB; and Calgary, AB, before retiring from the Military Police.

Following two years of living in Antigua, where Barry was a great host when family or friends came for a visit, he moved to Calgary where he embarked on a second career as a Correctional Officer at the Calgary Remand Centre and Calgary Correctional Centre until retirement.

He was an avid fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and cheered for the Calgary Flames. He thoroughly enjoyed playing hockey, baseball, golf, and cards. Whatever the game was, he was up for the challenge, and the win! He was competitive but always enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship of those around him.

Barry enjoyed life, had an infectious smile, and was always willing to help family or friends. He was an animal lover, but most of all he loved his family. When he became a grandfather, a noticeable light was sparked in him.

Barry is survived by his loving wife Sharon, their children, Lisa and Jordan; grandchildren, Lauren, Carter, and Logan; brothers, Ed and Bryan, and their families; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Ken Morken.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dan and Mary; grandson Kane, nephew Ryan, and great-nephew Daryan.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Barry’s family here.
