Dennis Chorney

Obituary of Dennis David Chorney

May 11, 1950 – Wadena, Saskatchewan

October 12, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that we share with you the passing of Dennis David Chorney on Saturday, October 12, 2024, surrounded by family.  Dennis was the loving husband of Lexie, and devoted father to three children, Matthew (Michiala), Zachary, and Natasha (Matthew). He was also a proud Gido to Rhett and Grace. He is also survived by his siblings Stella, LaVerne, and Orest.

Dennis was born May 11, 1950, to Sannie and Tony Chorney.  He grew up in Clair and Quill Lake, SK, where his love for hockey began at an early age. Upon completion of high school Dennis moved to Saskatoon, where he attended the University of Saskatchewan. Dennis married his wife Lexie on August 18, 1973. Within the week they moved to Calgary so he could attend SAIT, where he graduated with a Petroleum Engineering Technologist diploma.

Dennis’ career in Oil and Gas began at Pan Canadian Petroleum in the summer of 1975. Four years later, he took a leave of absence to attend Montana Tech where he graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Dennis then returned to Pan Canadian, where he climbed the corporate ladder, reaching a Senior VP role. He eventually decided to expand his experience in 1998 by accepting a position which took him to Albania, where he spent the following two years.  During that time, Dennis also started his first junior company, Argonauts Group Ltd. Over the course of the next 24 years, he passionately pursued the development of a few other junior companies, the most recent culminating in Teine Energy Ltd.

Throughout his career, Dennis was the recipient of many accolades and awards, the most significant being the Distinguished Alumni Awards from both SAIT and Montana Tech. Dennis was also very philanthropic, with his generosity tied to causes he was passionate about. He strongly believed in sharing his successes with others as evidenced by his active involvement in SAIT, Montana Tech, Woods Homes, and CAWST, just to name a few.

While Dennis enjoyed many activities and interests, he most enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Calgary was his home, but trips to our cabin in Vernon, BC, where he loved to cruise on his big boat, and visits to the condo in Maui, HI, where he loved to play golf, always brought him great joy.

Dennis wanted to express his sincere gratitude for the love and overwhelming support from his friends and family during his time of illness. All the calls, texts and visits meant so very much to him. The family would also like to thank the many dedicated health care teams that cared for Dennis during his journey.
