Obituary of Andrew ANTON
1926-Karlsruhe, Ukraine
2013 –Calgary, Alberta
Andrew Anton, cherished father and Opa, passed away on August 16, 2013 at the age of 87 years.
As a young man Andrew overcame overwhelming losses and challenges through hard work and strength of character. He was born in Karlsruhe, Ukraine on March 23, 1926. His childhood was taken from him by political persecution in the Soviet Union and the Second World War. He was forcibly separated from his family, conscripted into military service while still a boy and eventually imprisoned in Siberia. Andrew was able to escape to West Germany after the war. He came to Canada in 1951 and met his future wife Matilde while travelling to Canada. They married in 1953 and began their new life in Calgary, Alberta.
He was devoted to his family and unfailingly placed their needs ahead of his own. He faced many health challenges during the past few years but always showed quiet dignity, never complained and demonstrated kindness and compassion to all he met.
Andrew lived a full and active life. He loved nothing more than spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an energetic man who loved the outdoors and spent many happy hours camping, fishing and boating. He was a skilled craftsman who always seemed to find time for a project and relished creating for his children and grandchildren. He was a master gardener and the beautiful gardens he nurtured will give us a joyful legacy for many years to come.
He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by his children Andy (Karen), Hilda (Ken) and Hubert (Jacqueline) and his grandchildren Nathan, Joshua, Logan, Michael, Scott, Evan and Amy (Ryan).
Andrew was predeceased by his wife, Matilde Anton (Weger).
