VICTORY SERVICE BULLETIN AND OBITUARY FOR REV. DR. CARL EDWARD BORCHARDT
COCHRANE FUNERAL CHAPEL
APRIL 3, 2020
The Victory Service Bulletin and Obituary for Rev. Dr. Carl Edward Borchardt were written and typed by me, his wife, Dr. Darlene Borchardt and submitted to McInnis & Holloway.
NOTE: If you should happen to read a "corrupted" version of this obituary on another website, which has numerous deletions/omissions, it was plagiarized by an individual, without my permission or approval, who used my work from my original obituary which I wrote for the McInnis & Holloway website. This individual also made an error when she added a commonly used conclusion that his family was with him at the time of his death. The truth is that due to Covid-19, the hospital in Calgary was in "Lockdown" at the time of his passing so we were unable to be with him when he left us to go to his heavenly home. Needless to say, this insensitive intrusion was not appreciated, especially during our time of grief.
UPDATE Feb. 26, 2024: The contents of Rev. Dr. Carl's obituary, which I wrote, were a result of discussions I had with him previous to his passing regarding what he would like to have included in it and were the last requests of a dying man. In our opinion, the original obituary written for my husband on the McInnis & Holloway website should have only been used in its original form in its entirety if placed on any other website and not ruined and degraded by someone who, in our opinion, intentionally omitted much of the pertinent information that my husband wanted for her own personal reasons. Three examples of this are: She left out the states where he obtained his High School and post-secondary education in the USA; also, she deleted the additional cities where he served parishes/resided; plus his thankfulness for having the support and active participation of his wife and children within the congregations. In addition, she condensed his education qualifications and totally omitted that he was proud of his wife and all his children pursuing their post-secondary education in obtaining their university degrees, which is a rarity.
I spent numerous hours fulfilling my husband's wishes when writing his obituary, giving it the same thought and time to perfect it as I did when I was a student writing essays while attending various universities. My studies included experience in writing 20 - 40 page essays, many of them being graded A+. I even had requests from certain professors who asked to keep my original copies of those essays. In addition, I wrote a lengthy Dissertation when I obtained my earned Ph.D. Being more than qualified to write my husband's obituary, which was my responsibility as his widow, we did not appreciate having someone, without my qualifications, tamper with and ruin Rev. Dr. Carl's original obituary which she then submitted to other websites without my permission or authorization.
Therefore, my children and I are of the opinion that it is an injustice to see the original obituary, which some people have referred to as being beautifully written, degraded due to someone's personal negative attitude toward our family. Some of her derogatory comments were even relayed to us by others as well as experienced by us over the years. I had written Rev. Dr. Carl's obituary with care, following the dictates and wishes of my dying husband and do not want to see anyone debase and degrade it.

A private Funeral Service was held on April 3, 2020, at the Cochrane Funeral Home Chapel with only me and our children attending due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic restrictions. The service was officiated by our sons, Carl Jr. and Mark, with our daughter, Lisa, being a reader. The heavenly musical selections were chosen by me from the choral music CDs which Lisa had in her extensive collection. The Funeral Director told us that the Funeral Service was one of the most beautiful services he had witnessed. We also found it to be very lovely and comforting.
Rev. Dr. Carl Edward Borchardt was buried at the Cochrane Cemetery which is located on a promontory which overlooks Cochrane and from which you can see the scenic Rocky Mountains. Even though we live in the city of Airdrie, AB, which is adjacent to Calgary, AB, we preferred the cemetery in a small city West of Airdrie, closer to the Rocky Mountains and Banff because of the scenic views and peaceful surroundings.

The plaque was given by the Alberta-British Columbia District of Lutheran Church Canada to Rev. Dr. Carl for 40 years of full-time service in the ministry, during which time he held various positions within the Synod, District, Circuit, and Community while serving congregations in various cities. It reads:
The ALBERTA-BRITISH COLUMBIA DISTRICT OF LUTHERAN CHURCH – CANADA Expresses gratitude to God For the faithful ministry of His servant Rev. Dr. Carl Borchardt on the occasion of his 40th Anniversary in The Office of The Holy Ministry June 20, 1965.
In addition, ten years later, Rev. Dr. Carl Edward Borchardt received another plaque in recognition for being in the ministry 50 years.
The cross pendant Rev. Dr. Carl is wearing was a gift given to him from his retired friend, who was a clergyman and also a chaplain in the USA Army. He and his wife, who resided in Tucson, Arizona, were godparents to our daughter, Lisa. They invited us to their cabin at the Headwaters of the Mississippi every Summer, so our family would visit with them previous to vacationing in other states.

Dr. Carl's father, Rev. A.O. Borchardt, was an American citizen, who was a clergyman who accepted a call to Canada, thus Dr. Carl was a dual citizen of both Canada and the USA. Therefore, he chose to attend high school and post-secondary institutions in the USA.
